  16. <p>Like other mainstream Protestants, the Presbyterians rethink
  17. abortion
  18. </p>
  19. <p>    Abortion is no longer a "Catholic issue" in the U.S. -- if
  20. it ever was. Last September the biggest Lutheran body adopted a
  21. moderate pro-life policy. Two months ago, the Southern Baptist
  22. Convention filed its first joint Supreme Court brief alongside
  23. Catholics, urging abolition of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision
  24. that legalized abortion. The United Methodist Church almost
  25. pulled out of a pro-choice lobby it helped establish.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>    Then, last week, the Presbyterian Church (membership: 2.8
  28. million) expressed second thoughts about the pro-choice stand
  29. it took even before the Supreme Court did. Presbyterian
  30. delegates in Milwaukee said secular law should still allow open
  31. access to the procedure. But in terms of personal morality, they
  32. rejected abortion for economic reasons and endorsed it only for
  33. a grave threat to a mother's physical or mental health, severe
  34. physical or mental defect in a fetus, rape or incest. The new
  35. policy also acknowledges that many Presbyterians see each life
  36. in the womb as "created for a purpose and belonging to God."
